Riding my bike through China was a wonderful and sometimes harrowing adventure. During my three weeks exploring the southwest part of the country and Tibet, I learned how to dodge an urban maze of cargo bikes, motor scooters, cars and trucks, all while staying upright on my bicycle.

While some may indulge in second helpings of pumpkin pie over the holidays, more than two dozen Santa Cruz County cyclists will be staying in shape to compete at the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Bend, Ore., on Dec. 8-12.

Livia Peras plans to take the plunge this fall and try a sport that has intrigued her for years. She now has the bicycle, the fitness and the desire to try cyclocross, a type of bicycle racing that combines skills used by road and mountain bike riders.
Larry Hibbard has a handsome collection of silver and bronze medals from racing cyclo-cross at the national level, but the gold has been elusive. The 45-year-old Santa Cruz resident is determined to pedal to victory this weekend at the National Cyclo-Cross Championships in Portland, Ore.
Goldiberry Skeel was not discouraged by falling off her bike and losing a shoe at her first cyclo-cross race. The Santa Cruz native took the mishaps in stride as part of her debut in the Surf City Cyclo-Cross series last year at the Watsonville Fairgrounds.
After years of cheering from the sidelines and with nearly no race experience, Skeel plunged into cyclo-cross.
"It's such a supportive environment, I decided it was time to try it," said Skeel, 24.
