I don't expect to die when I go out for a bike ride. Yes, I realize riding my bike on trails or on streets can be dangerous, even fatal, due to traffic, weather and other risk factors. Though the daylight hours are shrinking, October is a favorite season for year-round cyclists here because the weather is still warm and the air is crisp. This weekend is exceptionally full of fantastic events for riding and spectating in Santa Cruz County.

At Wilder Ranch State Park, next to a grove of towering eucalyptus trees, with the Monterey Bay stretched far below, a group of 18 women mountain bikers gathered last Sunday... Our goals were to be safe, ride casually and get back in one piece. But we also had another priority: have fun!

As much as I love bicycling, I am not a true bike geek. When friends talk about what gear ratios they use to climb hills or what new components they have purchased to improve their performance, I nod enthusiastically, but then I start to zone out.

Next time I feel too lazy to ride my bike around town and am tempted to drive my car instead, I'll think about Courtney Dimpel, George Janour, Nils Tikkanen and a handful of other Santa Cruz County cyclists whom I consider "super commuters."

Joh Rathbun and Kathy King have never competed in a dirt jump competition, but the two mountain bike riders may soar skywards this weekend during the fourth annual Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival, taking place Saturday and Sunday in Aptos.
